■Bigsby B5/ビグスビー B5

ジョン・レノンのビグスビーB5のトレモロアームは、現行品のように鋲ではなく、プラスボルトで取り付ける仕様です。また、弦を取り付ける６本のピンは、六角ネジを使ってバーに固定されています。同じ仕様の60年代初頭のB5をeBayで手に入れて、Kauffman Vibrolaと交換しました。

The tremolo arm on John Lennon’s Bigsby B5—unlike the current model—attaches to the unit with a Phillips bolt rather than a flat-head stud. The string retainers are also secured to the bar with hex screws. I was lucky enough to find an early-’60s B5 on eBay. See the photos for details.

■B5 Installation/ビグスビー取り付け

ジョン・レノンの325にBigsby B5を取り付けたのは、ジョンの友人で、リバプールのバンドThe Undertakersのリードギタリストだったクリス・ハストンです。よく見ると、B5が微妙に右に傾いて取り付けられています。そのことをビートルズ楽器関連のBBSでクリス本人に指摘したところ、「ヘグッた！」という返答が。現在彼はレコーディング・エンジニアやスタジオ設計の第一人者として活躍しています。

It was John Lennon’s friend Chris Huston, lead guitarist of The Undertakers, who installed the Bigsby B5 on Lennon’s 325. If you look closely at the photo, you can see the B5 is mounted slightly crooked—tilted to the right. When I mentioned this to him on a Beatles-instrument forum, he replied, “I screwed up!” He later went on to become a respected recording engineer and studio designer.

B5を325のボディに固定しているのはマイナスネジです。ネジの大きさとネジの頭の溝の向きにこだわってみました。

The B5 is mounted on the 325 with slotted screws. I may have been a bit too particular about the size and angle of each one.

■Jackplate/ジャックプレート

ジョン・レノンの1958年製リッケンバッカー325の製造番号は「V81」です。ギターのデザインの一部として取り入れました。

John Lennon’s 1958 Rickenbacker 325 bears the serial number “V81,” which I incorporated into the design of my guitar.
